Chapter I · The Construction

The pillow top
comes off.

Every other mattress at this tier is built as a single fixed unit. When the surface wears, you replace the whole bed. The Knightsbridge is built the way the oldest English bed-makers built theirs. As two separate, serviceable parts.

Strap it on.A deeply cushioned, medium-soft surface. The hotel bed feel. Most people sleep on it this way.

Take it off.A firmer, more structured feel underneath. The same medium-feel pocket spring foundation we use in The Montague, our second most expensive mattress.

Rotate. Clean. Replace independently. When the topper has done its work in twelve or fifteen years, you replace just the topper. Not the entire bed.

This is how Vispring's original toppers worked when they were sold separately for £400 to £900 extra. We have built ours into the architecture. Included in the price.

Chapter III · The Fillings

Silk, cashgora
and British wool.

The same natural fibres layered into mattresses sold for four to eight thousand pounds at Harrods, Selfridges and the heritage retailers. Sourced through the same UK supply chain that has dressed those names for decades.

I

Silk

The natural regulator

Lustrous, breathable, naturally moisture-wicking. Keeps the surface of the bed cool in summer and warm in winter. The fibre that gives a premium mattress its distinctive feel against the skin.

II

Cashgora

The comfort layer

A goat fibre with the softness of cashmere and the resilience of mohair. Hand-teased into the upper layers for a quiet, responsive hand that holds its loft over decades rather than packing flat in a few years.

III

British Wool

The foundation

Native fleece from UK flocks, layered above the pocket springs. Naturally flame-resistant, hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating. The foundation fibre of every British luxury mattress since the trade began.

No polyester wadding. No synthetic foam in the upholstery. No recycled filler. Every fibre is laid in by hand, layer by layer, in the order our family has done it since 1968.
Chapter IV · The Build

A single bed.
One pair of hands.

No production line. No batching. The same person who cuts the calico pocket spring sheet ties off the last side stitch three days later.

I

Hand-nested pocket springs

11,304 individual springs across the layers. Each one calibrated and pocketed to respond only to the part of you sitting above it. No transfer of movement across the bed.

II

Three rows of hand side-stitching

The signal of a properly built mattress. Each row anchors the spring unit to the border wall, holding shape through tens of thousands of nights of use.

III

Reinforced edges

Sit on the edge. Change the sheets. Get out of bed without the surface caving. The border is built to take the same load as the centre.

IV

The removable pillow top

Sewn separately, strapped on, fully serviceable. Lift it off to firm the feel. Send it out to be cleaned. Replace it in a decade without replacing the whole bed.

Chapter V · The Comparison

Lined up against
the heritage names.

If you are already comparing premium mattresses, you are likely looking at Vispring or Hypnos as well. We respect both. Here is what we offer and what we do not. Specs current as of May 2026, based on publicly listed RRP at major UK retailers. Trial windows vary by channel.

Where the heritage names win: Vispring's thirty year guarantee and 1901 lineage are genuinely formidable. Hypnos holds a royal warrant. If those credentials matter most to you, they should. Where we win: the removable pillow top at this price, silk and cashgora in the upholstery at a tier where Vispring only offers wool and cotton, direct-from-maker pricing without retailer markup, and a founder who picks up the phone.
A Note from the Founder

The bed I would make
for my family.

My family has been making beds since 1968. For most of those years we made them for other people's brands. Harrods, Vispring, Furniture Village, And So To Bed. Our work sat in their showrooms under their names, at three or four times the price we sold it for.

The Knightsbridge is the bed I would not have been allowed to make for any of them, because the removable pillow top breaks the model. It lets you service the surface separately from the support. The bed lasts a generation rather than a decade. That works against the trade.

So we made it ourselves. Starting at £2,499 it is the closest you will get to the kind of bed Harrods sells for over six thousand pounds, made by the same hands, layered with the same silk, cashgora and British wool, without the floor that sits between us.

Chapter VI · The Sense Check

Who The Knightsbridge
is for.

From £2,499 is a serious mattress purchase. We would rather tell you not to buy it than have it arrive and disappoint.

Buy this if

  • You replace your mattress every fifteen years, not every five.
  • You have slept on a Vispring, Hypnos or Savoir in a hotel and looked up the price afterwards.
  • You want a medium feel on top of a firm, structured base.
  • You sleep with a partner whose preferences differ slightly from yours.
  • You appreciate things made by one set of hands rather than by a line.
  • You weigh cost over years rather than at the till.

This is not for you if

  • You replace your mattress every three to five years anyway. The build outlives that cycle.
  • You sleep best on memory foam that fully contours and holds you in position.
  • You need it tomorrow. Twenty-one day lead times are non-negotiable.
  • You want the cheapest version of "luxury" that still uses the word. We are not it.
  • You prefer a single-sided foam-topped bed at half the price. Our Pillow Top range starts at £1,099.

Chapter VIII · Size & Price

Chapter IX · The Questions

The honest answers.

Will the Zip & Link feel different to a one-piece mattress?

No. The two halves zip together at the centre under the pillow top, so the seam sits beneath the comfort layers rather than at the sleeping surface. The pillow top spans the full bed and hides the join completely.

Zip & Link is built into the order from the start. The springs, fabric and construction are otherwise identical to a one-piece Knightsbridge. The £160 covers the additional engineering, the zip hardware and the second case.

How is delivery handled, and what does it cost?

The Knightsbridge can be delivered standard (kerbside, by an external courier) or with white-glove service (two-person team, room-of-choice placement, unpacked and set up, packaging removed). Old mattress removal is available as an add-on at the same time.

Delivery options and pricing show at checkout once you have selected your size and postcode. White-glove is strongly recommended for a mattress of this weight and value, but it is not bundled into the headline price.

Why from £2,499 and not £4,000 like the comparable Vispring?

Because we sell direct. A Vispring Bedstead Mattress in a comparable spec retails around £3,200 to £3,800 at most UK retailers, and the same bed at Harrods sits closer to £4,500 once a divan and ticking upgrade is added. The maker sees a fraction of that. We removed the floor that sits between you and us.

The Knightsbridge is built to the same standard, by hands trained in the same tradition, on the same kind of springs. The price you pay is what the maker charges when there is no retailer between you and them. From £2,499 for the smallest size, scaling with size from there.

What does the removable pillow top actually do?

Three things.

First, it changes the feel. Strapped on, you have a medium-soft surface (the hotel bed sensation). Lifted off, the bed underneath is firmer and more structured. Some couples leave it on one side and off the other.

Second, it lets you service the surface separately. Send the topper out for cleaning. Rotate it. In a decade or so when it has done its work, replace just the topper. The mattress beneath, which is the expensive part, carries on.

Third, it protects the springs. Foreign matter never reaches the mattress core because the topper takes the wear.

Why is the lead time twenty-one days?

Because we do not hold stock. Each Knightsbridge is made to order, by one craftsperson, over three working days. The remaining time covers quality control, packing and routing to your delivery slot.

If you need a mattress for tonight, we are not the right answer. If you can wait three weeks for a bed that will outlast your kitchen, we are.

What is the trial period and return policy?

The Knightsbridge is made to order, which means we do not offer the 100-night trials you might see on mass-produced foam mattresses. What we offer instead is a fourteen day inspection window from delivery. If there is a fault, a defect, or anything inconsistent with the specification you ordered, we collect the bed and refund or replace at our cost.

If you are uncertain about firmness or feel, we recommend ordering a swatch pack first or speaking with us before you buy. We would rather have that conversation than process a return on a £2,499 mattress.

How does it compare to the other Sleep Co mattresses?

The Knightsbridge sits above our Pillow Top range. The Wexford, our firmest Pillow Top, has 7,485 springs and starts at £1,299. The Knightsbridge has 11,304, three rows of side-stitching rather than two, and the removable topper that no other mattress in our range offers.

If you are spending between £1,000 and £1,500, look at the Pillow Top range. If you want the most considered mattress we make, this is it.

Do I need a specific base or bed frame?

The Knightsbridge sits on any well-built slatted base with 3cm or narrower slat spacing, on a sprung divan, or on our adjustable bases. Wider slat gaps reduce the longevity of any premium mattress, ours included.

If you are buying a bed frame at the same time, all our Sleep Co frames are designed around this spec. We are happy to advise on which base is right for the room.

Care and maintenance?

Rotate head-to-foot every three months in the first year, then twice a year after that. The mattress beneath the topper is single-sided so no flipping is required.

The pillow top can be unstrapped and aired separately. It is removable for cleaning by a professional upholstery cleaner. Do not machine wash.
