What actually makes a mattress "natural"?

Most mattresses sold today are built on polyurethane and memory foam. Foam is cheap, quick to press and easy to ship in a box. It also traps heat, softens over time and can off-gas that chemical smell for weeks after it arrives.

A natural mattress does the same job a different way. Instead of foam, the comfort comes from materials that have kept people comfortable for generations: latex tapped from the rubber tree, wool, cotton, silk and horsehair, layered by hand over a core of pocketed springs.

The difference isn't a marketing label. It's what you're breathing in and lying on for eight hours a night, for the next fifteen years.

Those fibres breathe. They wick moisture away, move heat instead of holding it, and hold their shape without the dead-flat dip foam develops. The result is a bed that sleeps cooler, lasts longer and is kinder to make and to recycle at the end of its life.

Natural fillings
Three reasons it's worth it

Better for your health, the planet and your sleep

The case for natural isn't one thing. It's three, and they reinforce each other in every layer of the bed.

Kinder to your health

No polyurethane, no memory foam, no chemical off-gassing filling your bedroom. Natural fibres are naturally breathable and inherently more resistant to moisture and dust, which is why sensitive sleepers and parents choosing a bed for the whole family tend to look for them.

Kinder to the planet

Wool, cotton, latex and horsehair are renewable and, at the end of a long life, far easier to recycle than a slab of bonded foam. Made to order in Britain rather than shipped across the world in a vacuum bag. Add our recycling service and we take your old mattress away too.

Kinder to your sleep

Natural fillings regulate temperature in a way synthetic foam never quite manages, even with gel infusion. Individually pocketed springs support your spine point by point, so you get pressure relief without the trapped-heat, sunk-in feeling of an all-foam bed.

What's Inside

Every material earns its place

Nothing in a Natural mattress is there for show. Here's what each layer does, and why we chose it over a cheaper synthetic stand-in.

Natural Latex 50mm

Tapped from the rubber tree, not blended in a lab. Responsive and buoyant, it cushions pressure points then springs back rather than slowly sinking the way memory foam does. Naturally breathable and durable.

Wool Comfort layer

Nature's temperature regulator. Wool wicks moisture and moves heat away from the body, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer without any synthetic cooling gimmicks.

Cotton Comfort layer

Soft, breathable and moisture-managing. Cotton lets the mattress take a breath with you all night instead of sealing heat in against your skin.

Silk & Cashgora Luxury fibres

Rare, fine natural fibres hand-layered near the surface for a smooth, cushioned first touch and a subtle temperature buffer you feel the moment you lie down.

Horsehair Resilience

A traditional bedmaking filling for good reason. Springy and hollow, it creates tiny air channels through the mattress that aid airflow and stop fillings from compacting flat.

Pocketed Springs The core

1,000 to 11,304 springs depending on the range and tension, each sewn into its own fabric pocket. Every spring moves independently, so it responds only to the part of you above it, keeping your spine aligned with no bounce-through.

How a Natural is built

From the pocketed spring core up to the hand-tufted surface, every mattress is assembled by hand in the same order, then finished with rows of side stitching for edges you can sit right on.

01

Hand-tufted natural cover

Breathable ticking, tufted by hand to hold the fillings in place for the life of the bed.

02

Wool, cotton, silk, cashgora & horsehair

Layered by hand for pressure relief, temperature control and airflow.

03

50mm of natural latex

Responsive comfort that cushions and recovers, with none of memory foam's heat.

04

Individually pocketed spring core

Point-by-point support that keeps your spine aligned, tension set by spring count.

05

Hand side-stitched edges

Reinforced perimeter so the mattress holds firm right to the edge.

Three Natural Ranges

One natural philosophy, three ways to sleep

Every range is built the same honest way: natural latex and natural fibres over individually pocketed springs, no synthetic foam anywhere. They differ in the surface feel and the spring count. Start with the range, then choose your tension.

Find your tension in ten seconds

Every range comes in the same tensions, so pick your range for the surface feel, then your tension for how you sleep. Here's the short version.

Choose Soft
Ashbourne · Mayfair · Knightsbridge Soft

You sleep mostly on your side, you're a lighter build, or firmer beds leave your shoulders and hips aching. You like to feel cushioned and cradled.

Choose Medium
Harrow · Montague · Knightsbridge Medium

You move between positions, you share the bed with someone who sleeps a little differently, or you simply want the safe, universally comfortable choice.

Choose Firm
Cavendish · Wexford

You sleep on your back or front, you're a heavier frame, or you wake up sore and unsupported on a softer mattress and want to feel held level.

Why buy from us

The names you know, without the markup

For over a decade I supplied the mattresses behind some of Britain's most respected luxury bed names, Vispring and Harrison Spinks among them. Same heritage construction, spring counts in the same range, the same natural fibres.

The Sleep Co is that exact bed, made in our own factory and sold to you directly. No middle names to pay for. Just fifty years of manufacturing and a family bed-making heritage going back to 1968, in a mattress you can afford.

Every mattress is made to order and finished by hand. If you're unsure which tension suits you, get in touch before you buy. I'd rather talk it through than have you send one back.

Natural mattress questions, answered

What makes these mattresses "natural"?

The comfort layers use natural latex, wool, cotton, silk, cashgora and horsehair rather than polyurethane or memory foam, over a core of individually pocketed springs. It's the breathable, lived-in feel proper British bedmaking has used for generations, without synthetic foam.

Will it sleep cooler than my foam mattress?

Yes. Natural fillings wick moisture and move heat away from the body through the seasons, which foam struggles to do even with gel infusion. Wool and horsehair in particular help the mattress breathe rather than trap warmth against you.

What's a pillow top, and is it still natural?

A pillow top is a separate, deep cushioned layer stitched onto the top of the mattress, which is what gives a freshly-made hotel bed its plush surface. Ours are filled with the same natural fibres as the rest of the bed, not synthetic wadding, so the Pillow Top range is every bit as natural as the classic Natural range, just with a more cushioned feel and a higher spring count underneath.

What makes the Knightsbridge worth it?

The Knightsbridge is our flagship, built by a single craftsperson over three days rather than on a production line. It carries the highest spring counts we make (9,850 in the Soft, 11,304 in the Medium), is hand-layered with silk, cashgora and British wool over natural latex, and includes a fully removable pillow top you can rotate, clean or replace on its own. Lead time is 28 days because of the hand-build.

How do I choose between soft, medium and firm?

Soft suits side sleepers and lighter frames. Medium is the most universal choice and works well for couples. Firm suits back sleepers, heavier frames and anyone who wakes up sore on something softer. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll talk through what you sleep on now before you order.

How long until it arrives, and how is it delivered?

Most mattresses are made to order with a 14 day lead time (28 days for the Knightsbridge). White glove delivery is available anywhere in mainland UK: free drop-off, or £95 to bring it to your room. Add mattress recycling for £70 and we'll take your old mattress away when we deliver.
