136cm is fixed. What sits under it is the variable.
Every Byron Headboard headboard stands 136cm from the floor, whatever size you order. How much of it you actually see depends on the base and the mattress underneath. Pick one of our divans above and we already know the base height, so this becomes exact rather than a guess.
Measure the base rather than the mattress, and measure to the top edge of the base rather than the top of the sheet. Byron Headboard stands 136cm from the floor, so on a deep base with a thick mattress it deliberately sits close to the pillows.
Keep the base you have, or have us make one
Byron Headboard bolts to any standard UK divan. But a new headboard on a base that has done fifteen years is a new frame on a tired painting. Choose here and it updates the configurator above.
Nothing else arrives. Measure the width of your base rather than the mattress, and check the head end has fixing bolts. If it does not, send us a photo before you order.

Floor standing is the whole point
Most headboards sold in Britain hang off two thin struts and stop above the mattress. Ours run to the floor. It costs more to make, it weighs more to deliver, and it is the reason the bed looks built into the room rather than propped against it.
Floor standing
The upholstered panel carries on down behind the base to the floor, taking its own weight, then bolts to the base for stability.
- 113cm of upholstered panel, no gap at skirting level
- Sits solid because the floor carries it, not two bolts
- No rattle against the wall and nothing to retighten in year three
- Reads as joinery, which is what you are paying for
- Ten centimetres wider than the base, so it frames the bed
Strutted
Two thin legs bolted to the base, carrying the whole panel. Cheap to make, cheap to ship, and the standard across most of the market.
- Stops just above the mattress, leaving a gap to the floor
- All the load goes through two bolt holes in a chipboard base
- Works loose, taps the wall, and needs tightening
- Not offered on any Sleep Co headboard, at any size
What is actually inside it
Low profile with smooth rounded corners, a single inset panel, no buttoning. Underneath that, this.

Headboard runs 10cm wider than the base it fits, so the headboard frames the bed rather than lining up flush with it.
The questions we actually get asked
Should I take a divan with Byron Headboard, or keep the one I have?
Keep yours if it is under about eight years old, still silent, and the mattress is not dipping. Byron Headboard bolts straight on and you have spent the least money for the biggest visual change.
Take one of ours if the base creaks, if the mattress has worn unevenly, or if you want storage. Ordering both together means they are cut from the same roll of fabric, arrive on one delivery and are fitted in one visit, which you cannot get by buying them separately later.
How much of Byron Headboard will I see above the mattress?
Byron Headboard stands 136cm in every size. On a 39cm Sleep Co base with a 25cm mattress you will see 72cm. On a 44cm Ottoman with a 25cm mattress you will see 67cm. Use the fit check above to compare against your actual bed.
How do I know Byron Headboard will fit my divan?
Measure the width of the base itself, not the mattress and not the sheet, then order the matching size. British divans are made to standard widths with fixing bolts 15cm in from each side, which is what Byron Headboard is built to. Where listed, overall width is 113cm.
Is Byron Headboard strutted or floor standing?
Floor standing, and only floor standing. Byron Headboard runs to the floor and carries its own weight, then bolts to the base for stability. We do not make strutted headboards in any size.
Do you fit it, or does it arrive in a box?
Both are options. Drop off is included. Two-man expert installation is £95 and means our own team brings it into the bedroom, bolts it on and takes the packaging away. If you add installation you can also have the old bed collected and recycled for £70.
What if I do not like the colour when it arrives?
Made-to-order upholstery cannot be resold, so it is not returnable for a change of mind. That is exactly why swatches are free. If it arrives faulty or not as specified, that is ours to put right.
Everyone in this trade knows how to make a strutted headboard. Two legs, a sheet of board, a staple gun, done in twenty minutes. We have never made one, and I am not going to start now because it would be cheaper to ship.
