Most brands tell you their mattress has latex. Almost none tell you how much.
A latex hybrid typically carries twenty millimetres of latex over its springs. The Deepgrove core carries a hundred. Depth is the one number in this category you can actually check, and it is the number nobody wants to print. So here is ours, along with everything else in the build, measured.

Organic is the one word in this category you cannot simply help yourself to.
Natural is unregulated. Any brand can print it. The Global Organic Latex Standard is audited at every stage from the plantation to the finished block, and it requires a minimum of ninety five per cent certified organic raw material. Our latex holds it.
Deepgrove™
One hundred millimetres
A latex hybrid usually means a thin latex layer sitting on a spring unit doing all the work. At a hundred millimetres the latex is the mattress. It is deep enough to carry your shoulder and hip on its own, which is why the surface feels the same whichever of the three feels you choose.
Roughly five times the latex depth of a typical latex hybrid.
Open cell
Channels, not a solid block
Latex is moulded over a bed of pins, so the finished block is threaded top to bottom with open channels. Air moves through them every time you shift your weight. A closed cell foam has nowhere for that air to go, which is why it holds heat and why latex does not.

Elastic
It returns, it does not remember
Memory foam is viscoelastic. It softens with your body heat and keeps the shape you left in it. Latex is elastic. It returns to level the moment the load lifts, so you turn over on top of the bed rather than climbing out of a hollow.

A point of precision, because it matters. The latex in this mattress is certified organic. The cover, the fillings and the spring unit are not. So we describe the latex as organic and we do not call the mattress an organic mattress.
Where it comes from
A mattress that begins as sap running down a tree.
Hevea brasiliensis. The spout, the cup, and the shallow diagonal cut that yields latex without felling the tree.
How it starts
A tree, not a barrel
All latex begins as sap from Hevea brasiliensis, the rubber tree. It is a crop rather than a petrochemical, and a tree is left to mature for around six years before anyone cuts it.
Before dawn
A shallow cut, and a cup
Tapping is a thin diagonal groove through the bark only, cut early while the sap runs fastest. The tree is not felled and it is not damaged. The cut seals over, and the next morning the tapper moves a few millimetres down the trunk.
Same day
Milk, whipped into foam
The liquid has the consistency of single cream. It is whipped, poured into a moulded bed of pins and baked, which is what turns sap into an open cell foam threaded with channels. That structure is why latex breathes, and why it springs back.
Then
It keeps producing
A single tree yields for roughly twenty five years while it goes on absorbing carbon. At the end of its productive life the timber becomes furniture and a new tree is planted in its place. Very little else in a bedroom works like that.

How deep is the latex, really?
One hundred millimetres, across the full sleeping surface, in every size and every feel. The mattress is 260mm deep in total.
It is worth asking every brand you shortlist the same question, because most latex hybrids carry around twenty millimetres and very few of them print the figure. If a page tells you a mattress has latex but will not tell you how much, that is usually the answer.
I think I might be allergic to latex.
Worth taking seriously, and worth putting in proportion. True natural rubber latex allergy affects a small minority of people, and it is usually a reaction to proteins in thin dipped products such as gloves and balloons, where the material sits directly against skin for long stretches.
Foam latex in a mattress is sealed inside a cover, under your sheets, under a protector. You never touch it. That said, if you have a diagnosed latex allergy we will not try to talk you into this range. Ring us and we will point you at the Pillow Top or the Gel Hybrid instead.
Can I try it before I commit?

That matters more on this range than on any other, because latex is an unfamiliar feel. Most people take two or three weeks to settle into a new mattress of any kind, so judging it in the first week is not a fair test. Ninety days is.
Will it smell?
Slightly, for a few days. Latex has a faint sweet rubber note when new, not unlike a new pair of trainers. Air the room, leave the bed unmade for a day and it goes.
A hundred millimetres of latex sounds heavy.
It is. Latex is dense, and that density is exactly why it lasts. A Super King in this range needs two people to rotate. Add two man installation for £95 and our own team will bring it to your room and place it, which is most of the lifting dealt with.
Will it sag like my last mattress?
Latex has the best resistance to compression set of any comfort material we work with, which in plain terms means it holds its height rather than developing a permanent dent. You will see a slight body impression in the cover and quilt, which is normal on any mattress. Rotate head to foot every three months and it settles evenly. Fifteen year guarantee behind it.
Will my fitted sheets fit?
The mattress is 26cm deep in every size. Standard fitted sheets usually cope with 26cm, but they can pull off the corners once a protector goes on top. Deep fitted sheets, sold as 30cm or more, are the safer buy.
What about my existing bed frame?
Any standard UK divan, ottoman or slatted frame in the matching size. If you are on slats, a gap of under 7cm is what latex wants: much wider and a deep latex layer will bow between them over time. Our own frames use a solid platform base as standard, which is ideal for this range.
