Cut one open
Every divan base in Britain looks the same from the outside, which is why they are sold on price. The differences are all internal, and the biggest one is whether there are springs in it at all. Most bases at this price are a rigid platform. This is not.

The base is built as two halves bolted together, so the layout decides which sides you can open from and how far each drawer runs. Most people choose on the number of drawers. The better question is which sides of your bed are actually clear.

The number nobody publishes
A divan is the one piece of furniture in the house you sit down onto without looking. Too low and getting up is work. Too high and your feet leave the floor. The base is 39cm in every size, so your mattress decides the rest.
The Leg Divan is also 39cm. The Ottoman is 44cm, so it sits five centimetres taller before you add a mattress.
Legs, drawers or the whole floor
Same workshop, same frames, same fills, same fabric range. All three are pocket sprung, which is unusual at this price and very unusual in an ottoman. What separates them is what you want underneath the mattress.

Stated plainly, including the tolerance, because a base that is 2cm out is normal and a customer who was not told is entitled to be annoyed.

What people ask about bases
Why does a base need springs at all?
Because otherwise the mattress does all the work. A rigid platform reflects load straight back, so the mattress absorbs everything and wears at the same four points for ten years. A sprung base gives under load and shares it, which is softer to lie on and takes years off the wear.
Most bases at this price are a platform, because springs cost money and nobody sees them. Ours has 950 of them in King.
How much room do I need to open the drawers?
Allow roughly the length of the drawer plus room to stand, on whichever side you are opening from. 2+2 needs both sides clear to be worth having. If only one side of your bed is reachable, 4 Drawers gives you two long boxes you can still use from that side.
The base sits on concealed castors rather than flush to the floor, which is what lets the drawers clear a carpet.
Will it come up my stairs?
Single arrives in one piece. Double and above arrives as two halves that join on site with the hardware included, so a King base goes places a King bed frame cannot. Measure the narrowest turn on the route and tell us if it is tight, and we will confirm before the order goes into the workshop rather than on the doorstep.
Can I use my existing headboard?
Almost certainly. Fixing points are fitted at the head end as standard, which is what strutted headboards are made for. Any of our twenty-four headboards bolts straight on. Send a photo of your headboard struts if you want us to check first.
Why is the tolerance plus or minus 2cm?
Because it is upholstered by hand over a timber frame, and natural fills compress differently. Two centimetres is the honest working tolerance for a handmade base. It matters if you are fitting into an alcove, so measure your gap with that in mind.
Deep Divan or Leg Divan?
Deep if you want drawers, a more anchored look, or the extra 350 springs. Leg if you want to see the floor carry on underneath, get a vacuum beneath the bed, and keep air moving around the base. Both are 39cm to the top, so the bed sits at the same height either way.
A base is the part of a bed nobody photographs and nobody asks about, and it is the part that decides how the mattress feels in year seven. We built these for other people's labels for twenty years. We have not changed how we build them, only whose name goes on the corner.
