A real pocket sprung mattress, included in the price.
Almost every sofa bed in this country treats the mattress as an afterthought or an upsell. We are a mattress manufacturer that also builds sofa beds, so ours is neither.
If you have been comparing, you will have seen 18 cm quoted elsewhere. Ours is 16 cm. We would rather say so than pretend. What we will argue is that a pocket sprung mattress at this length, included rather than charged for, is a better bed than a deeper foam one you pay extra for.
One rolls out. One folds. That is the whole difference.
We make both, and we are not going to pretend one of them does not exist. A folding action creases the mattress to stow it. A roll out action does not. Which one you want depends entirely on who is sleeping on it and how often.
Jessica
Translation missing: en.products.product.from- Mattress folds in two to stow, so there is a crease across the sleeping surface
- Same pocket sprung mattress, same length
- Right for a spare room that gets used a handful of times a year
Emma
Translation missing: en.products.product.from £2,259- Mattress stays whole and lies as one flat plane, no crease, no bar under your hips
- Same pocket sprung mattress, same length
- Right if somebody sleeps on it most weekends or most nights
If the sofa bed is for occasional guests, the difference is better spent on a nicer fabric. We would rather sell you the Jessica and have you happy with it.
All three are pocket sprung. What changes is the layer on top.
Same depth, same length, same springs underneath. The upgrades add a comfort layer rather than a different mattress.
Standard pocket
Individually pocketed springs. Medium feel, even support, no roll together.
Memory on pocket
The same spring unit with a memory foam layer above it. Softer initial feel, moulds to shoulders and hips, more pressure relief.
Latex on pocket
The same spring unit with a natural latex layer. Cooler than memory, more responsive, and it recovers its shape rather than settling.
How often will somebody actually sleep on this?
The honest answer changes which mattress is worth the money, and we would rather you spent it in the right place than spent it at all.
Every measurement, before you order.
Three numbers matter more than the rest: how wide the sofa is, how far it comes off the wall when it is open, and how wide the bed is. Those three are highlighted. Measure your room against the first two.
| Dimension | Love Seat | 2 Seater | Large 2 Seater |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall width | 140 | 180 | 200 |
| Overall height | 92 | 92 | 92 |
| Overall depth, closed | 95 | 95 | 95 |
| Seat depth | 62 | 62 | 62 |
| Seat to floor | 52 | 52 | 52 |
| Arm to floor | 69 | 69 | 69 |
| Open, from the wall | 216 | 216 | 216 |
| Mattress width | 80 | 120 | 140 |
| Mattress length | 198 | 198 | 198 |
| Mattress depth | 16 | 16 | 16 |
All measurements in centimetres. Open from the wall is measured to the front edge of the bed.
Standard fitted sheets fit. Here is the arithmetic.
Our mattresses are longer than the usual 190 cm, which is why tall guests fit. That sounds like it should break your sheets. It does not, because our mattresses are also shallower than a bedroom mattress, and a fitted sheet only cares about the total fabric it has to stretch over.
| Your bed | Buy this sheet | Fabric needed / available |
|---|---|---|
| 80 × 198 × 16 | Standard single | 112 / 146 cm |
| 120 × 198 × 16 | Standard small double | 152 / 176 cm |
| 140 × 198 × 16 | Standard double | 172 / 191 cm |
Measured across the width, mattress plus twice its depth, against a sheet cut for a standard bedroom mattress. Buy the sheets you would buy for a normal bed and they will fit.
Will it fit, and will it fit open?
Closed it is under a metre deep. Open it comes a long way off the wall, and that is the number that catches people out, because a sofa bed can fit a room perfectly and still block the only door.
Floor, closed and open
Measure out from the wall the sofa will sit against. The second number needs to be clear of doors, radiators and the coffee table.
| Overall width | |
| Closed depth | |
| Open from wall | |
| Height to back |
Doors, stairs and turns
It comes apart for delivery. The sofa is never the problem, the action is, because it is the one part that cannot be reduced.
The action is carried on edge, so a tight doorway is usually still passable.
Who is sleeping on it
Length is rarely the problem. Width is, so choose on the bed rather than on the sofa.

Twelve weeks, and here is exactly where they go.
Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for you. It does not exist until you order it, which is the only way you get to choose the fabric, the size and the mattress. If that is too long, say so now and buy the in stock model instead.
- Week 1Fabric goes on orderCut from the mill in your chosen colourway.
- Weeks 2 to 6Fabric arrives and is inspectedRejected and reordered if the batch is off. This is the step nobody wants to explain and the one that actually moves.
- Weeks 7 to 10Frame, action and upholsteryHardwood frame built, action fitted and cycled, then upholstered by hand.
- Weeks 11 to 12Final check and delivery bookedAction tested, mattress paired, and our team calls you with a date.
Rhea
Nearly the same shape, held in stock in one fixed specification. It leaves us in days rather than months.
You give up the fabric choice, the size choice and the mattress choice, and the mattress is shallower. That is the whole trade, stated honestly.
We held the UK rights to this mechanism for fifty eight years.
From 1962 to 2020 our family was the exclusive UK distributor for the Sedac action. If you bought a good British sofa bed in that period, there is a fair chance the mechanism inside it came through us.
Then we started building the sofa beds ourselves, in our own workshop, with the action we already knew better than anyone in the country.
- 1962Exclusive UK distribution beginsThe Sedac action arrives in Britain through our family business.
- 1962 to 2020Supplying the British upholstery tradeFifty eight years fitting this mechanism into other people's sofa beds.

- TodayThe Sleep CoWe build the sofa beds ourselves in Britain and sell them to you directly.
The sofa beds are on the floor in Dudley.
Reading about a mechanism is not the same as pulling one open. Everything on this page is in our store, both actions side by side, so you can feel the difference between a roll out and a fold before you spend two thousand pounds on a guess.
Bring your room measurements. We will tell you honestly whether it fits, and if it does not, we will tell you that too.
Everything else, answered straight.
Can somebody sleep on this every night?
Yes, and the mattress choice is what decides how well. The action is engineered for daily cycling rather than occasional use, and because it rolls out rather than folding, the mattress lies as one flat plane with no crease and no bar under your hips.
On the standard pocket mattress we would call it a weekends and guests bed. If this is somebody's actual bed, spend the £200 on latex.
What bedding do I need?
Standard fitted sheets. The mattress is longer than a bedroom mattress but shallower, so a normal sheet has more than enough fabric. The size to buy for each option is in the bedding table above.
Is installation included?
Standard delivery is included and brings it to your room of choice by our own team, not a courier. Two man expert installation is £95, and for that we carry it in, assemble it, cycle the action to check it, remove the packaging and show you how to open and close it.
On a made to order sofa bed with a mechanism inside, we think it is worth it, and we would rather price it honestly than hide it in the sofa price.
What happens if I hate the fabric when it arrives?
This is why the swatches exist and why we push them so hard. Order them free, live with them next to your curtains and your floor for a week, in daylight and lamplight, then decide.
Because it is cut and upholstered to your order, it is not a stock item we can resell, so we cannot offer a change of mind return the way a warehouse retailer can. Faults and damage are a different matter and are covered.
Will it survive children, dogs and spilled wine?
That depends on the fabric more than the sofa. Every fabric shows its Martindale rub count and cleaning code, and we will tell you plainly which ones to avoid with a dog. The stain resistant weaves and treated velvets take a damp cloth and water.
The frame underneath is solid hardwood and FSC certified timber, guaranteed fifteen years.
Can one person open it?
Yes, one hand. The seat travels forward on the mechanism rather than being lifted, and the cushions are upholstered into the frame, so there is nothing to carry, store or tuck back in.
What exactly does the guarantee cover?
The frame and the action for fifteen years. It is a guarantee we can make because we hold the frame drawings and the mechanism knowledge in the same building.
Can I see one before I commit?
Yes. Our store is in Dudley, and the sofa beds are on the floor, open and closed. Sit on it, lie on it, open the action yourself, and put a hand on the fabric ranges rather than guessing from a screen.
If you cannot get to Dudley, order the swatches and ring us. We built it, so we can answer.
Order the swatches. Then decide.
Free, no obligation, posted the same day. Most people who buy one of these held the fabric in their hands first, and we think that is the right order to do this in.
